Google just released Gemini CLI, a command-line AI tool that’s ready to shake up how developers interact with their terminals. This open-source gem plugs the smarts of Gemini 2.5 Pro right into your command line, blending coding, research, and automation into one smooth package.
Gemini CLI is made for devs who treat the terminal like home base. Forget bouncing to a browser or IDE—this tool lives right in your shell. Powered by Gemini 2.5 Pro, Google’s beefy multimodal model with a 1-million-token context window, it tackles everything from whipping up code to debugging, tweaking files, or even spinning out content. Google calls it “a handy local sidekick for all sorts of tasks, from cranking out code and solving problems to digging deep into research or juggling projects.”

Pros needing more juice can tap usage-based billing through Google AI Studio or Vertex AI, or level up to Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise licenses. Ryan J. Salva, Google’s Senior Director of Product Management, put it plain: “We don’t want you stressing over a token meter like it’s a taxi fare, holding back your ideas.”
