Wharton MBA graduate reveals LinkedIn revoked his job offer, says he will not get any severance pay

By Divyanshi Sharma: LinkedIn’s decision to lay off around 700 employees came as a surprise as the job-search platform, aimed at helping people find new opportunities, was the one impacting the lives of hundreds of employees. The company, like many others of the tech world, announced the measure in order to cut down on extra costs. As per reports, the latest round of layoffs majorly impacted people from the sales, operations and support teams.

Ever since news of LinkedIn layoffs surfaced, a lot of people have shared their layoff stories and are looking for better opportunities on the platform. The company, however, hasn’t only laid off existing employees, but has also revoked few job offers.

LinkedIn revokes job offer

One such candidate, who was due to join LinkedIn as a full-time employee, took to the job-search platform and shared that his offer letter was revoked by the company and he won’t also be paid any severance fee. The candidate, an MBA graduate from The Wharton School, had been wokring with the company as an intern.

Despite that, he decided to look at the layoffs in a positive light and says that he understands that ‘setbacks are a part of life’.

His LinkedIn post reads, “Within a week of graduating from The Wharton School, I received the unfortunate news that LinkedIn made the decision to lay off 700+ employees, and with that, my full-time offer was rescinded without severance. Nevertheless, I understand that setbacks are a part of life and I am determined to use this experience to learn, grow, and pivot towards new opportunities!

“If you’re hiring or have any leads/advice on job opportunities, I’m in the market for roles in strategic implementation, business transformation, and/or product management. I appreciate everyone who has reached out and supported me at this time. #OpenToWork #LinkedInLayoff”

LinkedIn helping people in job search

Meanwhile, like most tech companies, LinkedIn is also focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) and how to make use of the tech in the best possible way. Earlier this month, news agency IANS had reported that LinkedIn is testing a feature that will help job seekers and give them personalised writing suggestions that they can send to hiring managers and boost their chances of landing a job. Users will be able to generate cover letter-like messages that are short and to-the-point, and can be sent to recruiters.

The feature, as per the report, is already available for LinkedIn’s Premium subscribers.

Ora Levit, Senior Director, Head of Core Growth + Premium at LinkedIn, wrote in a post, “Using generative AI with information from your profile, the hiring manager’s profile, the job description, and the company of interest, we create a highly personalised draft message to get a conversation started.”

She added that even though LinkedIn will help with the first draft, it is important for users to customise their application. Hence, job seekers should take time out to review the draft generated by AI, edit it, customise it to fit their voice, and then send it forward.

According to the company, the newly introduced feature is a further development of their AI-driven writing tool designed for LinkedIn Profiles. This tool harnesses the content already present in a user’s profile to generate engaging Headlines and About sections.
