American Caeleb Dressel won his third gold medal of the Tokyo Olympics with a world record-breaking swim to win the men’s 100m butterfly.

The 24-year-old touched home in 49.45 seconds – although was pushed late on by Kristof Milak of Hungary, who finished just 0.23secs behind.

Noe Ponti of Switzerland took the bronze medal.

Later, USA’s Katie Ledecky won the 800m freestyle gold for the third successive Olympics with a dominant swim.

She finished in a time of eight minutes 12.57 seconds as she got the better of Ariarne Titmus of Australia, who claimed silver, with Simona Quadarella taking bronze.

Titmus beat Ledecky in the 200m and 400m freestyle.

Meanwhile, Australia’s Kaylee McKeown eased to gold in the women’s 200m backstroke.

It is McKeown’s second gold of the Games after winning the 100m backstroke in a time of 2:04.68.

Canada’s Kylie Mass took silver with Emily Seebohm of Australia claiming the bronze.

Dressel could add another gold to his collection later on Saturday when he competes in the mixed medley final (03:43 BST) as he looks to finish these Olympics as one of the most successful swimmers at an individual Games.

After the relay, he has further gold chances in the 50m freestyle and the medley this weekend and should he win gold in all three remaining races he will finish with six in total.

Only two swimmers in Olympic history have won more at a Games – Michael Phelps with eight in Beijing in 2008 and Mark Spitz with seven in Munich in 1972.
