Tokyo Olympics 2020 odds, picks, predictions for July 30: Proven expert reveals best bets for swimming, track

Team USA swimmer Caeleb Dressel will try to keep proving he is one of the fastest athletes in the water in the coming days at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Meanwhile, numerous American track and field athletes are among the favorites as the land-speed portion of competition ramps up. Dressel, who was emotional after winning the 100-meter freestyle final at Tokyo 2020 Wednesday night, is favored in two more events and could win more gold in relays. U.S. track athletes Trayvon Bromell and Ronnie Baker (men’s 100 meters), Sydney McLaughlin and Dililah Muhammad (women’s 400 hurdles) and NCAA record-setter Athing Mu (women’s 800 meters) all have high hopes for adding to the American’s medal haul.

USA Baseball and USA Men’s Basketball also will be in action early Saturday, with the baseball team facing South Korea in its second group-stage game (6 a.m. ET), and the Americans taking on Czech Republic in hoops at 8 a.m. ET. William Hill Sportsbook lists Dressel as the -700 favorite (risk $700 to win $100) for Friday’s 100-meter butterfly final (9:30 p.m. ET) in its latest 2020 Tokyo Olympics swimming odds. He also swims in the night’s 50-meter freestyle semifinals (10:16 p.m. ET), and he is the -450 favorite in that event.

Before locking in any 2020 Tokyo Olympics picks or predictions, you need to see what SportsLine Olympics expert Mike Tierney is saying.

A national sportswriter whose work appears in The New York Times and Los Angeles Times, Tierney has covered nine Olympic Games in person. In the past two Olympic Games, his advice helped those who followed him cash in big, and he already has nailed a huge winner at Tokyo 2020.

Before Sunday’s men’s triathlon, Tierney tabbed Norway’s Kristian Blummenfelt as his choice to win gold, and that bet paid off big at +600. The Olympics expert saw good value in the Norwegian, who had won twice this year and was the 2019 Grand Final champion.

The 27-year-old Blummenfelt was in disbelief as he pulled away from the younger runners in the final stages to win by 11 seconds over Britain’s Alex Yee. It is his nation’s first medal in the sport, but picking a winner was nothing new for Tierney.

At the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in 2018, he nailed Suzanne Schulting (+2500) of the Netherlands and Norway’s Havard Lorentzen (+800) to triumph in speed skating and the USA’s Mikaela Shiffrin (+185) to win the giant slalom. Tierney also took the under (10.5) on the Americans’ gold-medal count, and that also cashed as the USA came in with nine.

And at the Rio 2016 Summer Games, Tierney told readers to bet over on Team USA’s gold medal count (41.5) and over on Team USA’s overall medal count (102.5). The result? 46 golds, 121 medals and two easy cashes. Anyone who followed Tierney’s advice cashed in huge.

Now, Tierney has been studying the 2020 Tokyo Olympics event schedule and digging down into the individual sports. He has released three confident Olympic best bets for Friday, and they all have big plus-money payouts. He’s sharing those 2020 Olympics picks only at SportsLine.

Top 2020 Tokyo Olympics predictions

Shockingly, Tierney is steering clear of the Australians in the women’s 50-meter freestyle, fading Emma McKeon and Cate Campbell. They are the favorites in the event, with 100 free gold medalist McKeon the +250 top choice and 100 bronze winner Campbell at +300. Both were on the Australian 4×100 freestyle relay team that set a world record to win gold on Saturday, while McKeon was in the lineup for the disappointing bronze-medal run in the 4×200 on Wednesday.

Both looked strong in the 100 freestyle Thursday night, with McKeon setting a world record. But McKeon has seen a heavy workload, with four events under her belt at Tokyo 2020. Any fatigue could present an opening, and there are plenty of swimmers who can take advantage. “In this event that is over in a blink, gold-medal contenders abound,” Tierney tells SportsLine.

How to make 2020 Tokyo Olympics picks

In addition to calling for a surprise in the women’s 50-meter freestyle, Tierney has locked in two other best bets for upcoming Olympic action. All three of these picks return at least 5-1, so head to SportsLine and check out what Tierney has to say.
