Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has claimed that the firm’s upcoming artificial intelligence (AI) models will surpass those of its Chinese rival, DeepSeek, in quality and advancement.

To plan the open-source project, a meeting was held last night. In the meeting, Altman said, “We were late to act on this, but we’re going to do it well now.” He further added that, “It’s going to be something near the frontier better than any current open-source model out there.”

During the meeting, he also faced questions about competitors such as DeepSeek releasing affordable open-source AI models. Sam Altman said ChatGPT’s growth hasn’t slowed down at all. He said, “Our growth is steady; even DeepSeek’s launch didn’t change it.” He added that he’s never seen a company grow this fast.

Since its launch in January, the Chinese AI DeepSeek has garnered significant popularity and global attention, encouraging this question. DeepSeek has also gained millions of users worldwide.

Sam Altman has also reported that ChatGPT has overtaken 800 million users, and it has 10% of the world’s users. Further, the firm has also launched GPT-4.1 (4.1-mini and 4.1-nano).

Altman has shared an X post stating that, “GPT-4.1 (and -mini and -nano) are now available in the API. These models are excellent at coding, instruction following, and long context (1 million tokens). Benchmarks are strong, but we focused on real-world utility, and developers seem pleased.”

these models are great at coding, instruction following, and long context (1 million tokens).

benchmarks are strong, but we focused on real-world utility, and developers seem very happy.

GPT-4.1 family is API-only.

Altman highlighted that the future of AI isn’t just about making the smartest models but creating products that people love to use with cheaper costs or costs that are affordable for people while being powerful.

He emphasized the importance of keeping all these points in mind. By keeping these key points in mind, in January the firm launched a new model called o3-mini. The firm said it’s 95% cheaper than their older GPT-4 model.
