New Delhi: Tired of overworking at the job triggers temptations to quit. But that also comes with a lot of requirements – another job in hand, working on a notice period, a resignation. However, a new social media trend that’s becoming a rage across the world is turning that idea on its head.
Known as Quiet quitting, the phenomenon is all about putting only those number of hours at work as much as you are paid for. It is about only doing what is required without actually telling your boss that.

The new-age employees find it difficult to slog extra hours because of a lot of mental health issues like burnout, stress, depression, an increase in cases of anxiety, and many other physical illnesses as well. Many are now saying they believe in finishing work on time every day, taking a lunch break, and even turning down projects that are outside their work domain.

Social media is also divided on quiet quitting as many feel it would end the hustle culture, where people work extra hours to fulfill their career aspirations.

However, there are different views as well. “Quiet quitting” isn’t laziness. Doing the bare minimum is a common response to bad jobs, abusive bosses, and low pay. When they don’t feel cared about, people eventually stop caring. If you want them to go the extra mile, start with meaningful work, respect, and fair pay,” the Organizational psychologist at Wharton, wrote in a tweet.

Burnout is real

Mental health experts have time and again harped on the need to address issues like burnout that happens because of chronic working and many people being workaholics.

“There is no pride in being a workaholic because you have been one you can’t expect everyone to follow suit. When considerable effort in a role isn’t valued and appreciated, employees should detach from their role,” Lee Chambers, a psychologist wrote on Healthline.

Benefits of quiet quitting

According to various health experts, a few benefits the phenomenon can give are:

  • Gives time to pursue hobbies: Chambers also said quiet quitting can be beneficial for the workers who can allow themselves more time in hand to pursue other interests that give them happiness and in turn improve productivity.
  • Balances work and family life: Quiet quitting can help a worker look after their family as well as work together instead of ruining both the activities because of not getting enough time.
  • Looks after mental health: When there is no excessive mental pressure, one’s psychological health is taken care of automatically.

Drawbacks of quiet quitting

Apart from a few benefits of quiet quitting, there are a few drawbacks as well, a few of them are listed below:

  • You are out of the race: It is a widespread belief that once you do not put in extra hours and are visible in front of the bosses, you might just not get noticed when it comes to salary raises or promotions.
  • Work may become boring: Quiet quitting can set in a feeling of underachievement, lack of motivation, and even lack of interest in your work.

Psychologists believe that while mental health is very important for the overall well-being of a person, work satisfaction and interest should also be a top priority. An individual has to know how to quiet quit successfully, taking both the pros and cons into consideration.
