Joe Rogan is never one to shy away from a hot take and it was no different when he spoke about Sha’Carri Richardson’s ban from the upcoming Olympics due to testing positive for marijuana.
The comedian, podcaster, and UFC commentator thinks the Olympics are “100 per cent horses**t” for not allowing her to compete. He also thinks Richardson, and other Olympians, should be millionaires for shedding their blood, sweat, and tears for their countries.
“All the winners of the gold medals, all those people that are generating insane amounts of wealth for the Olympics, they should get a giant piece of that,” Rogan said on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, where he regularly smokes marijuana with his guests.
“They’re responsible for the reason why people are watching the Olympics.
“The networks are making it (money) and the IOC is making it and all these other people are making it and the athletes, the whole reason people are tuning in, they get nothing. It’s insane! It’s a disgusting, corrupt system.”
After testing positive for traces of marijuana, Richardson was suspended for 30 days, which meant she could not run in the 100m race that secured her a spot in the Olympics. Richardson was seen as a heavy favourite in that event.
Despite the suspension, Richardson was still eligible to compete in the 4x100m relay. However, the USA Track and Field board of directors decided to leave Richardson off of the roster.
Now, the 21-year-old will have to wait until the next Olympics for a chance to shine on the biggest stage.
As for Rogan’s take on Olympians getting paid, he is only partially correct. According to CNBC, countries will award Olympians with a bonus if they secure a medal.
For the US, a gold medal winner will earn $AUD50,000 while silver receives $30,000, and bronze $20,000. For team sports, they will divide the money up evenly between the participants.
