Here’s What to Know About the Viral “Put Me First” TikTok Trend

Another day, another TikTok trend.

A new viral hashtag emerged on the platform over the past week, and this time, it’s all about prioritizing your needs and wants. From declining unexpected FaceTime calls to claiming the shower first after a beach trip (we’ve all been there), creators are coming up with all the different scenarios that make us say: “I gotta put me first.”

The audio in these TikToks stem from the television show Empire, a drama series that aired on the Fox network from 2015 to 2020. Specifically, the soundbite plays in the show’s season five finale and involves Cookie, played by Taraji P. Henson, and her husband Lucious, portrayed by Terrence Howard. While having an emotional discussion, Cookie repeats to Lucious, “I gotta put me first, I gotta put me first, I gotta put me first, Lucious!”

The original TikTok video, posted by user @citiboiisrt, uses this exact clip from the show with an overlapping caption that reads, “When your job ask why you calling out 😂.”

Since Citiboii SRT’s post on December 29, the sound has been used over 35,000 times and the hashtag has garnered more than 113 million views. Per usual, the videos are both painfully accurate and hilariously shameless.

“When I give my sister the fries I’ve been eating out of the whole car ride so I have the full one,” one video reads. I mean, come on, I think we’ve all been guilty of this one time or another.

“✨when you want to post a group photo but you are the only one that looks good✨,” another one writes. Who, me? (Maybe.)

Hey, no shame in the self-care game. For more of our favorite clips from this trend, scroll on.
