CLEVELAND, Ohio — From what seems like a galaxy of ideas, suggestions and options Cleveland’s baseball team has selected “Guardians” as it’s new nickname for the 2022 season.
Inspired by the Guardians of Traffic statues on the city’s Hope Memorial Bridge, the club will retain it’s blue and red color scheme with logos inspired by the Guardian statues’ headgear.
Reaction to Friday’s announcement on social media was instant and in many cases extreme. Fans either really like the new layout, or really don’t. Below are a few instant Twitter posts on what fans like and dislike about the new team name.
Yup, we named our team after bridge statues. — @Reflog18
On the bright side The Indians no longer have the lowest payroll in baseball. — @mikepolkjr
Cleveland Guardians, eh? Interesting. Like it actually. — @MazeInCLE
I don’t hate it. I usually hate everything when it’s brand new, so this must be a good thing. Still think the Spiders was cooler, but I can work with the Guardians. — @Jared_Carrabis
I liked Spiders. Or Rocks. Or pretty much anything that didn’t bring this to mind. — @JeffPassan
I never expected Tom Hanks to break the news. — @mpopovichREP
I love it. And it’s the name my 11yo son wanted for his favorite team. They weren’t going to please everyone. That was impossible. — @MLBastian
It’s clear to me that Cleveland wanted a name that was similar to their old one. Last five letters of “Guardians” and “Indians” are the same. — @DevanFink
The out-of-towners don’t get that those Guardian statues are cool as hell, because broadcasts always show the Rock Hall. Those statues are a Thome or Hafner homer from home plate. You’ll see them plenty now. — @lexhooper
Had a feeling this was the route they were going. Better than some lazy rock and roll theme. I’d have prob gone with Spiders or Blue Sox, but I’m glad we can move on from the old name. — @HenryJGomez
If you actually know what the name references, it starts to make a lot more sense. Honestly think some of you assumed it was picked from thin air or from a comic book. Google exists. Try it. — @harrypav
Cleveland Guardians reminds me of how people from Cleveland get really defensive about the city, which can be annoying but also sometimes endearing. — @RyllieDanylko
Reminder that the movie Major League’s opening shot is of one of the “Guardians of Traffic” statues — @Tylerjoelb
Not saying it’s the perfect name but for those not familiar with Cleveland the Guardians have a history in the city. They even used the winged headpiece in the new logo. These 2 Guardian statues have been on the Hope memorial Bridge since 1932. The Guardians of Traffic. — @wxbrad
