Apple Watch Series 7 Leak Hints At Stunning News

Apple Watch Series 7 is almost upon us. Although Apple is tremendous at keeping some secrets, it has to conform to things like filing new products in publicly accessible places, before they are actually launched. A new filing, spotted by Consomac, includes good, and not-so-good news.

Above all, there’s a possibility you haven’t heard about elsewhere and it could be amazing. That’s on top of the news that Series 7 could usher in a whole new design for the Watch.

The Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) is a treasure trove of information that Apple would prefer us not to see. And about this time of year, some product numbers that were previously unseen appear in this database.

The new numbers are A2473, A2474, A2475, A2476, A2477and A2478. Not much to go on, you might say. In fact, there are a lot of clues here.

These are definitely Apple Watches

We know this because at the end of each box is a reference to watchOS 8. That’s why there are lots of previously-seen watch codes, too, because they refer to the current models which will run watchOS 8. This information gives us our next clues.

Two GPS-only Apple Watches

Codes A2291 and A22292 are in the second box, and these are the model numbers of the Apple Watch Series 6 40mm and 44mm GPS-only watches. This tells me that the new codes in the same box, A2473 will be Apple Watch Series 7 GPS-only 40mm and A2474 will be Apple Watch Series 7 GPS-only 44mm.

There are four GPS + Cellular codes—but there’s a caveat

Codes A2375 and A2376 are in the first box, and these are the model numbers of the Apple Watch Series 6 GPS + Cellular watches for Europe, Asia Pacific and China, 40mm and 44mm respectively. This tells me that the new codes in the same box, A2475, A2476, A2477 and A2478 will surely be the models with cellular connectivity for Europe etc. Apple does not list the model numbers for the Apple Watch models which are sold in the United States, only the ones relevant to the EEC.

So, why are their four codes for the cellular models, not two? This is a puzzle, which we’ll come back to in a minute.

Here’s the bad news

Last year, there were a total of eight codes, two for Apple Watch Series 6 GPS-only, two for Apple Watch Series 6 GPS + Cellular, two for Apple Watch SE GPS-only and two for Apple Watch SE GPS + Cellular.

This tells me that there is categorically no Apple Watch SE 2 coming soon. It is inconceivable that Apple would release a mid-range Watch in GPS + Cellular but without a GPS-only option.

Maybe it’s Apple Watch Series 7 Edition?

Again, no. I’m not saying there won’t be an Apple Watch Series 7 Edition, there very well may be, but you simply can’t tell because Apple doesn’t give its Watches separate codes according to the metal casing. Last year’s code A2375 referred to five 40mm Watches with GPS + Cellular connectivity: Aluminum, Nike, Stainless Steel, Hermès and Titanium.

So, the codes just don’t give us a clue here, though some analysts believe Apple Watch Edition is may be phased out.

So, where does that leave us?

Well, if there’s no new Apple Watch SE, the extra codes refer to a different Apple Watch which is exclusively available in GPS + Cellular, just as Stainless Steel and Edition Watches are available currently.

Since we know the code doesn’t refer to metal, it must be some all-new Watch.

How about Apple Watch Pro?

Well, there have been rumors of Apple Watch Pro. Could this be it? After all, Apple managed to keep the lid on Apple Watch SE until right up to launch.

This top-of-the-range Apple Watch would be incredible news.

Of course, nothing is definite: it could just mean Apple is reverting to its system of one Watch for Europe and another for China, but that seems unlikely to me.

It’s only a matter of a few weeks, surely, until we know the answer.
