2020 Tokyo Olympics women’s tennis odds, picks: Expert reveals best bets for Thursday’s semifinals

Of the four players still in contention for the women’s singles gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, three are first-time Olympians. The only semifinalist with previous Olympic experience is Elina Svitolina, who reached the quarterfinals of the 2016 Games in Rio. The fourth-seeded Ukrainian looks to reach the final for the first time when she faces unseeded Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic in the semifinals of the 2020 Olympics on Thursday.

The match at Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo is scheduled to begin at 5 a.m. ET. The first semifinal match takes place at 2 a.m. ET, when ninth-seeded Belinda Bencic of Switzerland takes on No. 15 seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan. William Hill Sportsbook lists Rybakina as the -175 favorite (risk $175 to win $100) on the money line in the latest Bencic vs. Rybakina odds, while Bencic is a +138 underdog. William Hill also lists Svitolina as the -137 favorite in the latest Svitolina vs. Vondrousova odds, and Vondrousova as a +110 underdog.

Before making any 2020 Olympics women’s singles semifinal picks or tennis predictions, you need to check out the expert Olympic tennis picks and analysis from SportsLine’s Gavin Mair.

A renowned women’s tennis handicapper, Mair cashed in huge at the 2020 French Open. Mair picked Iga Swiatek to win (-163) and win in straight sets (+140), and he was right on both counts. He also called unseeded Jelena Ostapenko (80-1) winning the 2017 French Open, Naomi Osaka (32-1) winning the 2018 U.S. Open and Bianca Andreescu (20-1) winning the 2019 U.S. Open.

Now, Mair has broken down the latest Olympic women’s singles tennis semifinal odds and released his coveted best bets. He’s sharing all of his Olympic tennis picks and betting analysis at SportsLine.

2020 Tokyo Olympics women’s semifinals preview

Mair believes the opening semifinal match between Bencic and Rybakina can go either way. The 24-year-old Bencic has not allowed a shocking first-round loss to the 102nd-ranked Kaja Juvan at Wimbledon on June 30 affect her play in Tokyo. Ranked 12th in the world, she cruised through her first two matches before posting three-set wins in the next two outings.

After winning just one game in the first set against eighth-seeded Barbora Krejcikova in the third round, Bencic rolled past the reigning French Open champion before knocking off No. 13 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the quarterfinals. Rybakina has yet to lose a set at the 2020 Games, cruising to victory in her first four matches. But after comfortable triumphs over five-time Olympian Samantha Stosur and Rebecca Peterson, the 22-year-old had a little more difficulty dispatching Donna Vekic (7-6 (7-3), 6-4) and Garbine Muguruza (7-5, 6-1).

Svitolina has enjoyed the most professional success of the four semifinalists, which is to be expected considering she’s the veteran of the group at the age of 26. The fourth seed has won 15 career titles – eight more than the combined total of the other three players. Svitolina battled her way to three straight three-set victories in the Tokyo Olympics before defeating Camila Giorgi 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

The Czech, who is 17-6 on hard surfaces this year, likely will have her hands full with Vondrousova, who reached the final of the French Open in 2019. The 22-year-old pulled off a huge upset by defeating No. 2 seed Naomi Osaka 6-1, 6-4 in the third round and earned a spot in the semis when Paula Badosa retired in the second set of their quarterfinal match due to the excessive heat in Tokyo. Vondrousova lost her first three career meetings with Svitolina before posting a 6-3, 6-0 victory in the 2020 Italian Open.
